Economic strengthening of the “Pastos” women of Colombia

25 September 2023

Work in agriculture with indigenous women of the Pasto people is advancing slowly but steadily.

A reference agroecological package has been defined with pilot productions for its multiplication. The idea of agroecology is taking time to materialize in the chagras and productive fields of the “pasto” women. It is a task of persistence that must be maintained over time until changes occur in agricultural habits. The indigenous government of the Gran Tescual territory is standing out for the implementation of agroecological solutions.

What type of practices does Mundukide collaborate with the Pasto people?

  • Providing training and assistance in agroecology.
Providing assistance and capital for credit funds.

What objectives are being pursued in 2023?

  • Deepen the implementation of the agroecological agriculture model within the Gran Tescual reservation.
Strengthen the instances of agricultural assistance and marketing within the institutional structure of the reservation.

Interview with Diego Bastidas, leader of the process and member of the Mundukide team in Colombia.

This Friday, September 22, guests are invited to visit the fair trade agricultural market, “from the farm to the neighborhood,” which is supported by the hands of our farmers in the southern region, who have embraced agroecology as a way of life.

Diego Bastidas, leader of the process, stated that this work began in 2019, with training, composting, and sharing experiences in the communities, to strengthen food sovereignty and the family economy.

“There are about 280 families of indigenous and peasant women who have joined these learning experiences and are becoming stronger with these systems for reducing agrotoxics and agrochemicals, to produce healthy food.”

He added that what they seek with this strategy is to take care of the health of the communities, help farmers so that they can market directly and at the same time take care of the environment and productive properties.

The market will take place in the Lirio Norte neighborhood, starting at 9 in the morning, where you can find: tubers, cereals, fruits, vegetables and prepared foods.
