Expansion in Niassa
Due to the worsening of the armed conflict in the north of Cabo Delgado in the last 3 years, our work has been based on helping people who, fleeing the fighting, have arrived in the districts where we work.
Otherwise, in the neighboring province of Niassa, agricultural production and marketing has undergone a great expansion. At the end of 2021, three new teams were created to collaborate with the peasants of the districts of Mwembe, Sanga and Ngauma, so that by the end of 2022 there are already a total of 10 teams in Niassa and Cabo Delgado. A total of 14,659 families (63,034 people) have participated in the program and have cultivated an area of 3,100 hectares with the recommended techniques, obtaining an additional income of €1,600,000 from the sale of the harvest. In the current 2023 campaign, 16,000 new families are working in 4,000 hectares of fields, thanks to the support of neighborhood groups that have already achieved a solid local base.
Deolinda Julio, farmer from Niassa:
“The sale of a good onion production helps me feed my children better and I have also been able to buy chickens to sell eggs. Thanks to the improved techniques that Mundukide is providing us, I will be able to send all my children to school, if they wish.”
Elena Ramos de la Cruz, program coordinator:
“Progress is perceived in the towns and villages where we have intervened this past year. Above all, thanks to the production of sesame, soybeans and vegetables, the families have obtained a good result. We want to continue expanding the program to reach new districts and offer improvement opportunities to more peasant families.”
